Experience has taught me that a restaurant attached to a tourist attraction isn’t usually going to set the culinary world alight. So when I heard The Belle Vue would be using ingredients “sourced from within sight of the tower” and the menu would be designed by MasterChef Professionals winner Steven Edwards, I thought my preconceptions may be wrong this time.
I can count on one hand the number of outstanding meals I’ve eaten and the first time I dined at Isaac At, in the North Laine, is one of them. 12 months after that visit the restaurant has had a refurb and gone from pop-up to permanent. On its re-opening night, I went along to see what had changed and whether the food still impressed.
It would seem that even in the second week of January I was suffering from the Christmas syndrome many of us are affected by… not knowing what day of the week or date it is! This had resulted in turning up for the pub quiz a week early. Feeling hungry, more than embarrassed, we decided to leave the pub and make a long overdue trip to Wolfies of Hove for some Fish & Chips just a couple of doors down.
